What is the Fleadh Cheoil?
The Fleadh Cheoil, organised by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, is more than just a festival—it’s a vibrant showcase of Irish heritage. Established in 1951, the Fleadh Cheoil has grown from a small gathering of musicians into a sprawling event that attracts thousands of performers and spectators from around the world. The name “Fleadh Cheoil” translates to “Festival of Music,” and true to its name, it offers a week-long immersion into the best of traditional Irish music, song, dance, and the Irish language.
Each year, a different town in Ireland has the honour of hosting the Fleadh Cheoil, and for 2024, that town is Wexford. This event is a significant cultural milestone, highlighting the importance of preserving and promoting Irish music and traditions. Competitions are a key feature, with musicians of all ages competing for the coveted All-Ireland titles in various categories. But beyond the competitions, the Fleadh Cheoil is about community, celebration, and the unifying power of music.

Hosting the Fleadh Cheoil is a significant honour and responsibility for Wexford. The town has been preparing extensively, with local businesses, volunteers, and cultural groups working together to ensure a memorable experience for all attendees. Wexford’s selection as the host town highlights its commitment to celebrating and promoting Irish culture. From its historic buildings to its beautiful quay, Wexford is ready to welcome thousands of visitors for a week of music, dance, and celebration.
